Customer service in the tattoo industry can be lacking to say the least. What blows me aways is that on average, we as artist are asking our customers to pay between $100 to $200 per hour for the tattoo work we do. Yet on the whole there are a massive amount amount of artists that make fun of their customers, trash talk their tattoos, or are just plain rude and disrespectful. Why would anybody in their right mind pay for a service where they are treated in such a manner. Imagine you went to your mechanic or a doctor and were treated this way. Are we not as tattoo artists in the same position of confidence and trust with our clients. Should we not make our clients feel welcome and create a great experience for for them to remember. Tattoos can be un-nerving for some, so easing their fears and anxiety will go a long way toward creating that experience. Majority of the time people are getting a tattoo that represents something special, so the experience of getting the tattoo can be just as important as the actual tattoo. Our clients should be able to rely, trust, and hold us just as accountable as they would with any other industry. The cashier at McDonald’s has better customer service skill than most tattoo shops, and makes only minimum wage. How much better should we do for a service that is permanently marked on a person body for the rest of their lives?

So I wanted to get a new piercing today. Unfortunately I am the only piercer at the shop right now. So I had to go outside my shop family to get the piercing that I wanted. As you know when ever you look for service in an industry that you work in, you are even more critical of where you go. So I looked at almost every shop around town and came across Apogee in OB. From the very first phone call, Mija answered the phone, she was super cool and took the time to answer all my questions and made me feel very comfortable before I even got there. Now working for another shop and going to get work done somewhere else can be sketchy at time to say the least. There are time when some people in this business are less than welcoming when they find out your from another shop. I walked in the door and Mija remembered me from our call. I thought that was way cool, BTW what a sexy name. Instantly she knew I was from another shop and made me feel even more welcome like I was part of their family. The shop looked so cool inside. They had all kinds of different piercing art and rituals hanging up from all over the world. Incredibly clean shop as well. We have all seen the places that make you a little nervous, but these guy have their act together and the place is pristine. I met Luis, who was to be my piercer. Right away he was all smiles and ” nice to meet ya”. He took me back for the piercing. There were about three people waiting to get pierced but Luis was every bit as meticulous as I would have been. He did not rush just to get to the next customer. I was impressed with everything from how clean and sterile his setup was to his technique. It was really cool to watch another piercer work. He really went the extra mile to make sure everything about my piercing was perfect before he did it. With 13 years experience I’m sure I could learn a few things from Luis. Overall great guy and piercer. Super calm and professional the whole time. The piercing came out absolutely PERFECT. At the risk of loosing business at my own shop I have to give these guys my highest recommendation and my up most respect. Shops like this really make me excited and proud to be apart of this industry. I’ll definitely go back just to hang out if nothing else.

So I recently saw this stuff on the news. Another tattoo shop has opened up in east county. Then I saw this particular tattoo shop owner start to talk about his experience and what his tattoo shop is about. Now lets just get it out there that this gentleman worked for Blue Tattoo Cafe for 3 days. He was sent down the road because in three days he did three horrible tattoos. Now he opened up a shop under the premise of being strictly a Christian tattoo shop. So now I’m watching the news and he says that Jesus had a tattoo. LMFAO, you’ve got to be kidding me. I am a Christian, and I am studying theology in school. Somehow I think if Jesus had a tattoo then it would not have been over looked by thousands of years of theologians. So this guy is on the news talking about his tattoo shop and how he only does Christian tattoos. What does that mean exactly? Does that mean he only does crosses. Personally I do not agree with what he said about Jesus. Now I don’t mind another tattoo shop in town, nor do I mind competition. Not until one of my customers went to him to get a tattoo and came back with the tattoo posted here. The picture below it is what he promised her it would look like. You decide! Now at this point I feel like I am obligated to say something to warn people about what is going on over there. Now make no mistake I do not claim to be the best artist in the world, San Diego, or even El Cajon. But the art coming out of this shop is not ok and people are getting messed up for life. Anyway, there is a pic of the tattoo, post you thoughts about the tattoo, Jesus having a tattoo, or anything else related. Thanks for Reading and take care.

So I had the honor of hanging out with one of the greatest tattoo machine builders in the industry today. It was refreshing to meet someone that has dedicated more than 20 years of their life to bettering the industry. It challenged me to think about not only what I have gained from this industry but also ask myself what am I giving back. I knew that a lot of work went into building a tattoo machine but I never knew just how much work it really took till I built my first tattoo machine yesterday with Dan Dringenburg. Being at his shop brought a sense of American pride back that I haven’t felt in a long time. To see a group of guys working together and building something was something I have not seen in a long time. So many of our manufacturing jobs have been sent over seas that we hardly make anything in America anymore. Dan and his guys take a lot of pride in each machine they build. Dan says, ” Each machine we build someone will support and feed their family with”. I can only imagine how many people in the industry owe a debt of gratitude to Dan and his guys for building a quality machine. I have to say I left Dringenburg & Co with a lot of respect for the guys there working 18 hr days to keep up with the demand for tattoo machines. It also made me take a second look back at the old school guys in the industry that paved the way for us younger guys to make a living at what we love to do. Over all it was a humbling experience and I have nothing but the greatest respect for the guys up there at Dringenburg and hope to continue to hang out with them more in the future. Thanks again guys.
